Fruit fly is the world’s worst fruit pest. Appearing on nearly every continent around the world, fruit fly can quickly destroy fruit and vegetables grown commercially and in home gardens.
Since 1897 the South Australian Government has worked to prevent the introduction of fruit fly by requiring all commercial shipments of fruit to be free of fruit fly, placing restrictions on fruit carried by travellers and detecting and eradicating fruit flies which have been introduced.
South Australia’s Riverland enjoys a fruit fly free status, enabling producers to access world markets worth millions of dollars in export income each year.
